What does online counselling in India cost, and how do you judge "best"?

Online counselling prices in India vary because counsellors and platforms set fees. Affordable means sustainable for you, and best means a room where you can speak honestly.

Short answer. There is no single price for online counselling in India because each counsellor and platform sets fees. Affordable means an amount you can keep paying, and the best online fit is whoever you can speak with plainly. My first conversation is thirty minutes and free; booking runs through a form first.

In short:

  • Prices vary by counsellor, platform, session length, and how often you meet.
  • Affordable means a plan your budget and week can carry without strain.
  • Best is the person you can speak with plainly; fit shows up early.
  • A short, free first conversation helps you decide without pressure.

What decides the price of online counselling in India?

Prices for online counselling in India sit on a spectrum because counsellors and platforms set their own fees. Money is always finite. You will see different fees across private rooms and large platforms, and even across cities while you are on video, so ask what you are actually booking and how long each session runs. A shorter slot and a longer slot are different purchases.

Frequency matters. Meeting every week is a different spend from every two weeks, and that shapes your monthly outlay more than any small gap in per-session fees. Some hope spacing sessions saves money and headspace. Others prefer a denser start and then taper when the ground under their feet feels steadier.

What you pay also reflects the counsellor's availability and boundaries. Some hold fewer clients, which means more room in their head between sessions. Others work within tight windows and prefer clear, contained appointments. None of these choices are wrong; they are different ways to work.

How should I think about "affordable"?

Write the number down. Set a real, honest ceiling for this part of your life and a real idea of hours you can give, then look for rooms that match the maths without contortions. Affordable means you can pay for it without making your month wobble. I don't mean skipping rent or pretending groceries cost less.

Hidden costs exist. Subscriptions, intake fees, and strict cancellation policies can turn a low headline fee into a high actual spend. Read the terms, ask about reschedules, and check whether you are buying a package or a single session. If the information is hard to find, that is already information.

  • Decide a monthly ceiling first, then work out frequency and session length.
  • Ask about cancellation, rescheduling, and any subscription or intake fees.
  • Check whether prices change for video versus in person, and how that's handled.
  • Plan breaks in advance; stopping and starting can add friction and cost.

Does a higher fee buy something different?

Time is the spend. Longer sessions cost more and they let you sit without rushing, hold your thought to the end, and leave a little room to breathe before you go back to your day. You're also paying for access, like wider scheduling windows or shorter gaps to the next available slot, or for between-session check-ins that some rooms offer and others don't. My room ends at the session boundary.

Style and focus differ. One counsellor may be direct and plain, while another goes slower and leaves more space for silence. You are also choosing how you like to work, whether that means practical experiments you can try this week or slower attention to patterns you keep walking into, and both have a cost and a feel.

How I work at Rafiq

I'm Satlaj Sachan, counsellor in Bengaluru. I have been practising since 2015 and work with adults roughly 25 to 45, in English and Hindi, over video and in person in Bengaluru. We can walk together. Rafiq is the name of my practice at heyrafiq.com, and it comes from my podcast, running since 2020; it means the friend who walks with you.

A first conversation is thirty minutes and free, and booking runs through a form first. I've worked with more than 140 people since 2015. I'm not a doctor and cannot prescribe; if medication is worth considering I refer. I also run a small gathering in a cafe in HSR, Bengaluru for five or so people; it is not counselling and the day moves week to week.

When should I see someone else or seek urgent help?

If you want a diagnosis for insurance or work, or you hope to explore medication, you need to see someone who diagnoses or prescribes. That is not my room. A psychiatrist handles medicines and will tell you what to watch for, how to dose, and what to expect over the first weeks, while formal testing is a separate service from counselling. Choose the door that fits.

If you feel unsafe, cannot trust yourself with your own safety, or someone around you is at risk, please get urgent help. Make the call now. Call Tele-MANAS, India's free 24/7 mental health helpline, on 14416, or go to a hospital emergency room if that is faster and closer to you. In those hours, safety is the only question.

How do I pick the best fit online?

Start with a short call and your gut. Notice whether you felt rushed, talked over, or sold to, then check the basics: language, time zone, session length, fees, and how rescheduling works. Fit is a felt thing and it shows up early; this piece might help you frame the choice: Is therapy even worth it?. Take notes right after.

If you are hesitating because nothing is on fire, that is still a reason to come. Many adults meet me for fog, flatness, or low energy rather than fireworks. Two starting points: Do I need therapy if nothing is actually wrong? and Burnout and depression look the same from the inside. Read, think, then book if it feels right.

  • Look for clear fees and policies in writing before you commit.
  • Choose a counsellor whose pace and plainness match how you think.
  • Pick a cadence you can keep; consistency matters more than intensity.
  • Notice how you feel after the first call; that feeling is data.

Common questions

What is a reasonable price for online counselling in India?

There is no single reasonable price because counsellors and platforms set their own fees. Think in terms of what you can sustain monthly and how often you plan to meet. Ask about session length, cancellations, and any extras. A clear, upfront fee and policy is the minimum bar.

Is online counselling cheaper than in-person counselling?

Sometimes it is, sometimes it is the same. Many counsellors keep one fee for both, and some separate them. The bigger difference often comes from how often you meet, not the format. Ask directly and decide based on your schedule, privacy at home, and what helps you speak freely.

How do I find affordable online counselling in India?

Decide a monthly ceiling first. Then look for counsellors who are clear about fees, session length, and cancellation rules. Consider meeting every two weeks if weekly is heavy. If money is tight right now, call Tele-MANAS on 14416 for free, 24/7 support while you plan your next step.

What makes an online counsellor the "best"?

Best means the person you can speak with honestly and keep seeing. Fit shows up in the first call: do you feel heard, unhurried, and not managed. Check the basics too: language, schedule, privacy, fees, and how you will work together. A good room is steady and clear.

Do counsellors diagnose or prescribe medication?

Counsellors do not diagnose medical conditions or prescribe medication. I do not prescribe. If medication is worth considering I refer, and a psychiatrist will guide you on that. If a formal diagnosis is important for you, seek an assessment with someone who offers that service.
