What are the symptoms of anxiety and depression?

Anxiety can feel wired and urgent; depression can feel flat and slow. They often overlap. Here are plain signs across body, sleep, focus, and mood, and how they differ.

Short answer. Anxiety often shows up as restlessness, a tight chest, an urgent mind, irritability, and a push to do more. Depression often feels heavy and flat, sometimes slow. Many adults experience both, so I look for patterns across sleep, appetite, energy, focus, and how you talk to yourself when no one is listening.

In short:

  • Anxiety = wired, urgent, restless. Depression = heavy, flat, slowed. Overlap in sleep, appetite, focus, and irritability.
  • Look for patterns across body, sleep, thoughts, and behaviour across days, not single moments.
  • See someone if life is shrinking; call Tele-MANAS 14416 for urgent risk; psychiatrists can discuss medication.
  • Small checks help: evening wind-down, morning light, less late caffeine, short walks.

What do these feelings look like in everyday life?

Anxiety can push your system into overdrive: a fast heart, tight shoulders, restless legs, a stomach that flips, an urge to check your phone again, rapid thoughts that skip tracks, and a sense that something might go wrong if you slow down. Everything feels on alert. It can also look like arguing sooner than you mean to, or saying yes to work you do not want.

Depression can slow everything: mornings feel sticky, small tasks sprawl across the day, food tastes dull, your face gives little away, and the things that once pulled you out of bed do not even scratch the surface. Some days feel heavy. It often sits with low interest, low energy, and thoughts that say there is no point in trying anything new.

Both can sit in the same week: wired on Monday, flat by Thursday, and the weekend becomes a hole you fall into while everyone else seems to be moving forward. People call it numbness. I hear that word often in my room with adults between 25 and 45 who are trying to keep jobs, homes, friendships, and the errands that keep life moving.

Where do anxiety and depression overlap, and where do they differ?

Overlap usually shows up in the body's basic rhythms: choppy sleep, appetite swinging wider than usual, concentration that keeps slipping, and a body that aches in the neck, jaw, back, or hips even when you have not trained hard. I watch those first. They tell me when your system is asking for relief, even before words arrive.

Speed often separates them. Anxiety tends to run fast and forward, full of what-ifs and scanning, while depression drifts slow and heavy, focused on loss, stuckness, worthlessness, or shame, and it can take longer to get out of bed or answer a simple message. Irritability sits in both, which confuses many adults who never felt 'sad' and still wonder about depression.

  • Shared: sleep shifts, poor focus, irritability, body tension.
  • Anxiety-leaning: restlessness, racing thoughts, stomach flip, urge to do or escape.
  • Depression-leaning: flat mood, slowed speech or movement, pulling back from people.
  • Mixed days: morning jitters with an evening crash, both present in one week.

When should I see someone, and when is this the wrong room?

If these signs keep tripping you at work, in bed, or in conversations, and you find yourself pulling away or pushing too hard, it is time to speak with someone who will take you seriously. Make that call sooner. You do not have to decide names and labels before you start.

If you are in immediate danger, if you cannot keep yourself safe, or if someone else is at risk, call Tele-MANAS on 14416 for 24/7 support, and reach medical care as quickly as possible. Safety comes before insight. For medication or inpatient care in Bengaluru, DocVita lists psychiatrists, Amaha runs a psychiatric hospital, and Mindtalk / Cadabam's have 24/7 psychiatric and inpatient infrastructure.

In Bengaluru, I am a counsellor, practising since 2015, and I work with adults roughly 25 to 45 in English and Hindi, over video and in person. I am not a doctor and I cannot prescribe; if medication might help, I refer. Rafiq means the friend who walks with you rather than correcting you, and that is the posture here.

What small checks can I try this week?

Start with noticing before any overhaul: track bedtime, wake time, naps, caffeine and alcohol, screens after dinner, movement, and meals, then choose one small place where you might add a little kindness or structure. Write it down daily. Patterns appear faster when they live on paper rather than in your head.

If sleep is tangled, build a simple wind-down and test it for a few evenings; I wrote a plain guide here: How to build an evening that ends in sleep. Small walks also help. Try this specific thing after dinner: The fifteen-minute walk after dinner.

  • Cut caffeine after lunch or set a daily cut-off that respects your sleep.
  • Keep your phone outside the bedroom, or at least out of reach of your pillow.
  • Eat breakfast even if appetite is low; simple food counts.
  • Get morning daylight on your face for a few minutes.

How does counselling help with these symptoms?

In my room, we slow down and name what is actually happening to you across body, thoughts, choices, and days, then we organise small experiments that fit your life rather than a perfect plan from a book. We walk beside change. I do not diagnose or fix, and I will say when something looks outside my limits.

If medication might matter, I suggest a conversation with a psychiatrist; if you want to compare roles before you start, this piece may help: Counselling vs therapist: what do these words mean, and who should I see?. On pacing, I wrote here about expectations: How long does therapy take for anxiety?.

What if it is boredom or burnout instead?

Work strain and plain boredom can look like low mood and anxiety, especially when your day is meetings, screens, commute, and little control, so it is worth checking for context before you call yourself depressed or anxious. Context changes the picture. I wrote more here on that question: Am I depressed or just bored?.

If your stress spikes around deadlines, sleep is poor, your patience at work is snapping, and you feel oddly cynical, read this as well: Burnout at work: what are the signs, and what actually helps?. Work stress distorts mood. Write down one work change you could test this week, then tell someone you trust.

Common questions

What are common physical symptoms of anxiety and depression?

Anxiety can show in a fast heart, shallow breathing, tight jaw or shoulders, sweating, shaky hands, stomach churn, and lighter sleep. Depression can show as heaviness, low energy, slowed movement, aches, and changed appetite or sleep. Bodies speak first. A doctor can help rule out medical causes for similar symptoms, including thyroid issues or side effects.

Can someone have anxiety and depression at the same time?

Yes. Many adults sit with a wired, worried mind and a heavy, low body across the same month. Mornings might feel urgent; evenings might flatten out. Labels can be useful later. Starting a conversation sooner tends to reduce the quiet panic of trying to sort this alone, and it opens options, including a medication consult if needed.

How do I choose between a counsellor and a psychiatrist?

If you want a space to sort patterns, practise skills, and make small tests, a counsellor is a good start. If medication might help, see a psychiatrist. For urgent risk, call Tele-MANAS on 14416. Marketplaces like DocVita list psychiatrists. Amaha runs a psychiatric hospital in Bengaluru and Mindtalk / Cadabam's offer 24/7 psychiatric and inpatient infrastructure.

Does counselling give me a diagnosis?

No. I do not diagnose. Counselling with me focuses on what you feel and what changes would be tolerable right now. If a formal diagnosis is necessary for medication or documents, see a psychiatrist. Directories like DocVita can help you compare options, and Amaha runs a psychiatric hospital in Bengaluru if you want a medical setting.

What if I cannot afford counselling right now?

Start with free or low-friction options. Tele-MANAS on 14416 is open 24/7. YourDOST is often free through an employer or university, in 20+ Indian languages. 1to1help is an employer-provided service. Directories you can compare include TheMindClan, Practo, and TalktoAngel. Online platforms include MindPeers, Manastha, BetterLYF, and HopeQure. Wysa is an Indian AI-first app that escalates to a human when needed.
